VALENTINES VIEWS: MEET LUKE AND MATHIAS

The people we most care about, trust, and rely on don’t always have to be the ones we’re in a relationship with – in fact, those people often are rather friends than lovers, accompanying us for years, enriching not only our private but even our work life. With Luke Bereuter and Mathias Kappaurer, founders of Viennese bar Tonstube and many other restaurants, bars, and catering services, such two peas in a pod seem to have found each other, proving how well work and friendship go together and that spending your days with your best friend sometimes doesn’t even feel like work at all. Still, Luke and Mathias are not shy of being ambitious, combining their strengths to continuously improve their bars and restaurants for their customers, employees and themselves. Because if your work and private life already are kind of the same why not embrace it in the best way possible – and together that’s just way more fun.

Read what the best friends had to say about combining their visions and seeing the world through each other’s eyes below, as we asked Luke and Mathias some questions about being friends with work-benefits.

How did you meet?

Since we’re both from Bregenzerwald we always kind of knew each other but not really at the same time. In Vienna we then both worked at the Naschmarkt and our friendship started from there.

What was the first thing you noticed about him?

That he is always in a good mood and has a great sense of humor.

Was there an exact moment you knew “this is it – I want to work with him”?

When we started working at Naschmarkt together I already noticed that we have a similar work approach: “If you do something do it right”. That’s when I knew that if I’m going to start something on my own I would be with him.

What is the one thing you most admire about him now?

That he is so reliable. He’s always there when I need him even though that’s not always the easiest thing.

What is probably the first thing he thinks about when he wakes up in the morning?

I think the first thing he does is wondering where he can get something good to eat. I don’t know anybody who can eat as much as him and still isn’t full.

What is the first thing he notices about another person?

Everything, Mathias gets people really well and always knows what they’re about, he has a great sense for what others think or feel.

What is one trait that sets him apart from others?

His approach to life and also to his job. We both work a lot, still Mathias is always in a good mood and keeps everything going.

What have you learned from him?

DJing. Watch out for “DJ Käpz”.

How would he spend the perfect summer day?

In the Admiral Wettbüro next to Karlsplatz – with an “all you can eat” buffet!

What’s his biggest motivation / inspiration in life?

Me and him have quite similar views here. We both really like to work and want to build a solid company that provides a good work place for us and our employees.

If he could change anything in the world, what would that be?

He would make parking in Vienna free of charge.

How would you describe what he does for a living?

He always tries to see the positive in everything.

How much do your work life and your private life intertwine?

For the last 3 years we basically had no private life, so there actually isn’t anything that needs to be separated from our work life.

What’s his ultimate dream/goal?

To live in a hotel where somebody cleans after him everyday and he doesn’t have to do anything!

And lastly: What makes him special overall?

We know each other so well know that we really get the strengths and weaknesses of the other person. We always try balance each other out. That makes us a really strong team and I hope we’ll have a lot of successful years coming.
